In response to the humanitarian crisis affecting the lives of 11 million people in the Horn of Africa, and the famine threatening hundreds of thousands of children with severe malnutrition in Somalia, Adar Foundation has become part of a collaborative network of organizations providing services to save lives.
Adar Foundation is currently collaborating with Amoud Foundation which operates feeding center in various regions within Somalia, as well as Aadamiga Somalia, HIRDA and Dr. Hawa Abdi whose camp hosts over 90 thousand Internally Displaced Persons inside Somalia.
Reports from the ground:
Our people on the ground are reporting a disheartening news and appeal for urgent response. According to our representatives, all of Somalia is in need of feeding centers that are established and run by Somalis.
Areas most affected by the famine:
The most famine affected regions are, Bay, Lower Shabelle, Bakol, Gedo of the south and Sool of the north. In addition, there is great deal of devastation where the Dadaab refugee camp of Kenya mainly housing Somalis that was built for 90,000 is today home to nearly half a million people, making it the biggest refugee camp of the world.
Despite high level visits of UN delegations, very small scale humanitarian efforts reach these areas. The Luq corridor and toward the Dolow Somalia (border with Ethiopia) is home to the largest concentration of the internally displaced persons (IDPs). The town of Luq alone is home to 11300 IDPs and establishing feeding centers is a must.
Establishing Feeding centers:
In response to overwhelming demand for help that is coming Somalia and the border regions, Adar Foundation made the moral decision to establish feeding centers/kitchens inside Somalia and in the border such as Dolow. The center is straight forward. However, we need dedicated volunteers, location that is feasible for all you need to buy for the feeding kitchen.
The cost of feeding per person is $1.50/day.
Kitchen/feeding center for 300 peopleis $450.00 per day
Kitchen/feeding center for 700 people is $1050.00 per day
Kitchen/feeding center for 1000 people is $1500.00 per day
Volunteers:
We have volunteers on the ground leading the cause for Adar Foundation who are on the ground and they are ready to help setting up the feeding kitchens.
Clothing Drive:
Some of the sad news from the Somali elders was the dire need for clothing. Over one teleconference, we learn a woman who could not come out of her hut because she was unable to cloth herself and was afraid to be seen naked. So, in addition to the hunger, lack of water, shelter and medical supply, there is a great need for clothing for diverse groups of the population (women, children and men).
Types of clothes needed:
For women:Abayas, long skirts and long dresses, shirts, scarfs, diric and guntiinos
For men: Pants/slaks, shirts, shawls, macawis and shoes (sandals)
Your participation is absolutely essential:
Without your support and to successfully achieve the above goals, Adar Foundations needs your help in meeting that challenge. So, kindly send your donations to Adar Foundation who will establish the feeding kitchens and sustain them.
